Takayama Old Town Walking Tour
Join the Takayama Old Town Walking Tour by Takayama Localized and explore the city with an English-speaking local guide. Walk along the Miyagawa River, visit Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine, and wander through historic streets lined with wooden townhouses. Along the way, discover the people, traditions, and everyday life behind the scenery.
Our guides share the city they live in and love—not just its landmarks. Through local stories and conversation, explore how Takayama’s past connects with life today, notice details you might otherwise walk past, and ask the questions that spark your curiosity. Yes. The Takayama Old Town Walking Tour introduces you to the city’s history, culture, and local life with an English-speaking local guide. It is a great starting point for getting to know Takayama beyond its landmarks.
Is this different from the Takayama Free Walking Tour?
Both tours follow the same route and cover the same content. This is a paid tour, while the Takayama Free Walking Tour is tip-based. You do not need to book both to enjoy the full experience.
Where does the tour start and finish?
The tour starts in front of RESTING AREA Daimasa and finishes in Takayama’s old town. Please check the meeting-point map on this page before setting out.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes. Advance booking is required. Please select an available date and time and complete your booking before coming to the meeting point.
Are food and drinks included?
No. The tour price covers your guide’s services. Food, drinks, transportation, and personal purchases are at your own expense.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for the weather. Bring drinking water, sun protection in warmer months, and an umbrella or rain jacket when rain is forecast.
Does the tour run in the rain?
Yes. Tours normally go ahead in the rain, so please come prepared. If Takayama Localized cancels your tour before it begins because of severe weather or other circumstances, your payment will be refunded in full.
What happens if I arrive late?
Please be at the meeting point before the scheduled start. Guides wait a maximum of 10 minutes. Arriving later than this is treated as a no-show, and your booking will be cancelled without a refund.
How do I cancel my booking, and can I get a refund?
Select “Manage Booking” in your confirmation email, or contact info@takayamalocalized.com with your booking details.
You will receive a full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before your tour begins. Cancellations within 24 hours and no-shows are not refundable. Cancellation deadlines are calculated in Japan Standard Time (JST).
Can I change my tour date or time?
Paid tour bookings can be rescheduled up to 24 hours before the scheduled start. For help with a change, please email info@takayamalocalized.com. Changes cannot be made less than 24 hours before the start, and the cancellation policy still applies.
What if a train or flight disruption prevents me from joining?
Email info@takayamalocalized.com as soon as possible with evidence of the delay or cancellation. If we confirm that the disruption prevented you from joining, we will refund your payment in full as an exception to the usual cancellation and no-show rules.
